Delivery Story....It's a good one!

For those of you who haven't heard the exciting story behind Avynlea's birth....this blog is for you. And if you have heard it, enjoy! lol

On March 19th at my Doctor's appointment, I had my membranes stripped in hopes that I could go into labor on my own and try for another "natural" birth. I went to my friends house to pick up Emmitt and Savanna and noticed that my contractions were pretty regular and growing in pain! So my friend came over and helped me get my house in some sort of order and my bags packed in case I was going to the hospital. At around 5:30pm I called Joseph (who was in parent teacher conferences) to let him now he needed to come home. We dropped our kids off at our friends house around 6:15pm and arrived at the hospital and were admitted around 6:30pm. Now I know this sounds very uneventful! But keep reading! lol I was dilated to a 3 and 70% effaced. So they hooked me up to the monitors and watched me for two hours. At which nothing had changed. So, they sent us home around 8:30pm!!!
A little side note: We had a half hour at the hospital before Savanna was born...no IV, no drugs...nothing. Completely natural!
So I was crying and upset that we were being sent home. We stopped and got some food and went to check on the kids. Emmitt wanted to come home and Savanna wanted to stay. And all the while my contractions are getting harder and closer! But I'd had so many false alarms that I didn't want to go back just yet. We get home and I get into the shower and tub for about 45 min to an hour. When I got out, I was thinking that maybe I would be at a 5 or 6 and the contractions were really hard to breath through. I told Joseph that we need to go back to the hospital and that I wanted an epidural and that I didn't think I could make it all the way. We dropped Emmitt off and remembered that we forgot our phone list (since we don't have cells anymore).
On the way back to our house....I was pushing! AHHHH! I couldn't stop it! Luckily our hospital is only 8 minutes away. But that 8 minutes felt forever. I had two more really hard contractions that I was scream and pushing through! Poor Joseph was speeding and hoping there was not cop to stop us and telling me all the same to "DON'T PUSH!! BREATH THROUGH IT!!!" The last contraction before the we got to the hospital, I could feeling her crowing!
We pulled up to the hospital and walked pass the registration desk, who was trying to stop us from going upstairs. All I knew was that I had about 3 to 4 minutes to get to the 2nd floor from the car before another contraction would come and I would start screaming (like I had NEVER screamed before!)
We made it to the elevator and as I stepped out of the elevator another contraction came along with me screaming and pushing! The nurses ran up and got a wheelchair and raced me down the hall. We passed the "Family Waiting Room" and there was a 14 yr old boy with his mouth just gaping open in utter shock! lol
They got me to the delivery room and stripped my pants and shirt off and got me on the bed, just in time for me to push her head all the way out and then her body! The nurses figured I had been at the hospital for about 5 minutes! Also Avynlea was "born in the caul" which means that my water never broke and the amniotic sac was still in tacked and covering her face (which was face up and the doctor said if she was face down, we would have had her in the car!) with her eyes open and staring at the doctor!
There are a few legends that talk about how babies born in the caul is a sign of good luck and an omen that the child is destine for greatness.

So all in all, I got my wish of another natural birth, but next time we will insist that we not be sent home and camp out at the hospital! lol

We Are Having A....

Little Girl!!! I just found out today that we are having another little girl! After looking really hard and having to walk the halls to get her to move, we saw what we were waiting very impatiently for! We will be calling her Avynlea Joyce Stevenson and she will come around April 1st! I hope that she will come during Spring Break which is the last weekend in March! Wish us luck!!

Joseph Was Sleepless in Seattle

Joseph spent a week in Tacoma (Suburb of Seattle) taking a class training him to become an Advanced Placement (AP) English Teacher.

While he was there, he and a group of fellow teachers were able to go to Tacoma's water front and eat at a yummy restaurant that jutted out over the water. How cool is that?

He stayed in the dorms on Pacific Lutheran University which were small, cramped and creaky! All of the classes that he was taking were at the other end of the campus. His dorms were at the bottom of campus which was set on a big hill. Happy Hiking!

But the campus was beautiful and made the hiking nice!

The kids and I stayed home and hung out and go our selves ready for Vacation, the Quarterly Primary Activity and Kacie's Baby Shower... Wow what a week! We were sooo glad to have our daddy back! Emmitt and Savanna stayed awake during the late drive to the airport to get Joseph. They were soo excited to see him!

Shannon's 29th Birthday

For my birthday, I wanted to have fun with some friends and have good food. So since I had never been to the Texas Road House for ribs, that's were we went! Then afterwards we went to Boondocks for an evening of fun and fun and fun and fun.... lol

Fruit Pizza's

My undertaking this summer was to make Fruit Pizza! I had it one time when I was in young women's and loved it. I knew how it all worked and what not, but I had never made it for myself. I was going to make it for Kacie's baby shower and needed some practice. I thought it would be the perfect time to try it out when Joseph's mom was here for the 4th of July.

So it looks okay and yummy. I didn't have too much fruit on hand. There was kiwi, plums and mandarin oranges....it did taste good, but the next one for the baby shower is my crowing achievement!!! lol

Doesn't that just look soo yummy!!! This one had strawberries, bananas, blueberries, kiwi and mango! Definitely the best combos! It was a hit and was just soo yummy! I think I want another!

Androcles and the Lion Play

For part of Joseph's Theater Tech Internship this summer, he had to work on the play sets and learn how to work the lighting and some sound. So the kids and I were able to see the play for free! And boy did the kids LOVE it! Here are some pictures.

The kids were laughing and having so much fun. Savanna loved the Lion, but was too shy to say anything after the play was over. In between the two showings, the actors were so nice to Emmitt and Savanna and let them come up on the stage and play around on the mat. Everyone was so nice and did a fabulous job with the play!!

We also decided to head out to the zoo while we were together. The cousins had fun exploring the aminals together. But the icing on the cake was the merri-go-round that almost closed...it took some begging to do one more ride since that was the main attraction for the yonger ones!

My brother-in-law's parents house is where we gathered after my niece Maya was baptized. There was lots of yummy food and a big blowup slide in the backyard for the kids. And games galore to play. It was a day of reverance and joy; food and play. But the funniest part was when I was telling Emmitt and Savanna that we were going to Grandma McDonald's House. They were really excited to go and when we got there, Emmitt turns to me and says, "Mom, this is NOT McDonalds...." lol I said no this in GRANDMA McDonald's...needless to say he was a little disappointed. lol But they had fun anyway.

Emmitt's 5th Birthday

Emmitt turned 5 on June 8th! He has grown and grown so much since that little baby boy that I brought home from the hospital. The past five years have been full of fun, sadness, laughter and tears! I'm so glad that Emmitt came into our lives! What a joy he is. Here are some pictures from his birthday. First we started with swimming at the YMCA (which there are no pictures of since I was wet too.) Jody helped me chaperon the 6 boys! She brought water balls which turned into a war...boys against the to women adults! It was a blast.

After opening all the fun and exciting new toys, we thought food would be an excellent choice!

And of course, we had the birthday boy blow out is candle on his chocolate cupcake!

All in all it was a very fun birthday!

Joseph's 29th Birthday

Here are some pictures that I took of Joseph with his birthday cakes...yes he got 2! lol The first one wasn't supose to be like that...well it was but not really! The second cake was suppose to be the first...lol I had left the whipped cream in the car over night so I just make a sheet cake, which was awesome. So the next weekend I made him his yummy black forest cherry cake. And boy was it yummy!

Emmitt's Amazing Day

We are so proud of Emmitt! Yesterday we went swimming at the YMCA, since Savanna had been talking about it all weekend and carrying her suit everywhere! We have been working with Emmitt (for almost a year now) to go from his red ribbon (it lets the lifeguards know that they can't swim) to the next level which is yellow. You have to be able to float on your back and when let go of to be able to stand up. So finally yesterday he decided he wanted the yellow ribbon! We got the lifeguard and he passed with flying colors! We were so proud! AND with that yellow ribbon, he was able to go down the BIG twisty water slide. So Dad, Mom and Savanna went up with Emmitt. Dad went down first (to help Emmitt up if needed at the bottom) and Savanna and I watched from the top. Now from a mother's perspective, I was in the process of having a heart attack! My little (big) boy was going down this big slide all by himself! He did a couple of 360's and was on his tummy a couple of times (with my heart jumping out of my chest!)but ended up in the correct direction at the end of the slide where dad was waiting! Emmitt said he didn't want to do that again because he bumped his head! lol!

Mosquitoes

The other day Emmitt and Savanna were looking out our sliding glass door at the baby Mosquitoes. Emmitt turned to Savanna and said matter of factly "we can't open the door because the mosquitoes will suck your blood." Savanna's mouth dropped and in horror she said, "suck my blood?!?!" Joseph and I were in the kitchen giggling to ourselves listening to the exchange.

I just happened across this picture of the group A-HA, known for Take On Me and other awesome songs. I had to laugh because my sister had this one hanging on our bedroom wall. Iwas around the age of 10 or 11 and always had such a hard time getting dressed with that poster on the wall! I just have to chuckle at myself!

And who could forget the Monchhichi's? I loved watching this show and I had my very own (the one below, but he had a red hat to match his bib)! Dino Week in Preschool

My Preschool kids had so much fun this week talking about Dinosaurs! We made a Volcano to show one way that they might have died and then we threw "meteors" (paper balls) at our dinosaurs as another option of their deaths. Poor Dinos, they were not feeling loved! lol! We also made fossils of different dinosaurs for them to take home. It has been a fun week!

Holland

This is Joseph's Mom and Grandma (Oma) in Holland! I'm so jealous! Look at those beautiful tulips! Mine still haven't popped! So Joseph's family line is really fun. Oma is Dutch-Indonesian. She grew up in Indonesia in a Dutch Colony. Her mom was Indonesian and her dad Dutch. Opa (who passed away a year ago) also grew up in Indonesia in a Dutch Colony. His mom was Indonesian and his dad was German*. Oma and Opa met in College in Holland, where they married and had their first two kids (twin boys). When they were still very, very little they moved the family to Brazil so they could try to get into America (this in itself is a very facinating story and will share it soon). That is where Joseph's mom, Marion and her younger brother were born and stayed for 12 years (trying the whole time to get into America). They moved back to Holland and lived for about 2 years and were finally able to move to America! Marion was 14 years old and didn't know any English (as well as her family). She was held back one grade and took summer school to get caught up. So Marion and her siblings talked Dutch at home, learned Portuguese at school in Brazil. Then in Holland, learned how to read and write Dutch. I can hear her accent when she's nervous (which isn't too often). So Oma and Marion are enjoying their visit to Holland, seeing family members and taking in the sites! I wish I could be there!

*I'm going to double check about Oma's and Opa's parents. I think it's right, but I'm not 100% on it. Still, it's very interesting!

Savanna and Babies

Savanna loves babies! Even sleeping, she wants to feed them and love them! She seems to have one in her arms at all times. When we go to the store, she finds where the babies are and I have to tear her away (not quite kicking and screaming, but pretty close)! We talk to her about us wanting to have another baby and now she is all excited, patting my tummy (and other bumps) saying "baby"! Not yet! lol. She will be such a good big sister! Emmitt is soo ready for another! He has told us that he wants another 'Savanna'! Then he thinks about it and then says he wants 'Jackson' (our friends baby that we watched over night. The kids loved every minute of it)!

My sister in law emailed our whole family to tell us about Baskin n Robins .31 cent a scoop. She thought it would be fun for all of us to go to our different stores (Corvallis, OR; Lake Oswego, OR; Provo, UT and Caldwell, ID) to eat ice cream and be together in spirit! I loved the idea! Who knows if it all happened. I'll have to find out. But the kids loved the idea of going out for ice cream! They wanted to ride in Papa's car going there and even liked Papa's ice cream flavor better than their own. Sorry Dad! lol. We got our 11 scoops for about $3.60! What a deal! I'm sure the owner was wincing at such the low price, but he was so cheerful and happy to see everyone, it made the experience even more fun!

Meowing

Savanna is such a lovey, dovey little girl! She loves to crawl up on my lap and she'll start rubbing her cheek on my cheek and then start meowing. When the meowing starts is when she wants some affection and to be loved. She doesn't do this any other time! lol It is the cutest thing.
She has been doing this for about a year, so for last Halloween, we dressed her up as a black cat. She had that meow down pat! At our church trunk-o-treat, she would meow for her candy! It melted our Bishops heart! She has created a soft spot in there!

Zoo Trip

This was our trip to the Boise Zoo with some friends. We had a lot of fun looking at all the animals, but I really think that the animals were just as curious about us as we were of them. Savanna just loved the monkeys and if you ask her now if she saw a monkey at the zoo, she will stop look at you very serious and say "yes!" with remembrance in her eyes...lol She was completely amazed at those monkeys! Emmitt was loving life digging in the sand box looking for dinosaur bones. He wants to be a Paleontologist. It was a perfect day for the zoo and over all the kids loved it.

Sharing a Bedroom

We finally decided to move Savanna into Emmitt's bedroom and have her sleep on the bottom bunk. She has been waking up every night for months cry and screaming. We think it was a few things. We have a train about 4 miles from our house, but it sounds like it is outside your window, especially in Savanna's room. And we think she was just scared of being in her own room all by herself. We told Emmitt that we would change Savanna's old room in to a big play room, so needless to say, he was excited at that idea! So last night was our first night and she did awesome! She cried a little but didn't come into our room until 7am with Emmitt holding her hand! Then Emmitt told us that he had sung some songs to Savanna to help her go back to sleep! How cute is that! LOL! We'll see how the rest of the week goes! It's so nice to get a full nights sleep! And we want another little one?!?!?!

Preschool Fun

Last week in Preschool we talked about Butterflies. How they start out as an egg and then turn into Caterpilars, who turn fat because they eat everything. Then they curl up and make a Pupa, which is a cocoon. After a few weeks in the Pupa, a butterfly brakes free and flies to find Nectar. So to help the kids to understand this concept a little better, I thought it would be fun to wrap them in toilet paper to make their "cocoon" (the first picture). Then they broke free from their "cocoon" to fly around the room like butterflies (second picture). It was so much fun. And fun for the kids too!

Savanna's Birthday Time Out

I thought this was pretty funny! Savanna was having a pretty hard time sharing her toys (even though it was her 2nd birthday) and wasn't being very nice to Emmitt. So of course, when you act like that you have to sit in a time out. We happen to glance up and saw her peeking up over the edge of the chair and was giggling a little, so we just had to snap a picture. Joseph and I were laughing (inside, of course) and thought this would be a good picture to remember. Needless to say that time out wasn't very effective....what to do!

Twilight Series

This Series of books by Stephanie Meyers is, I have to say, one of my favorites. It's a good romance that is clean and very fast to read. They are making a movie of the first book. So my claim to fame is that they are filming all the cafeteria and biology shots (which is most of the book as most fans know) in my High School (Madison) in Portland, OR. My sister was the one who brought that to my attention and we both thought that was pretty funny! The movie should be coming out in December! Here is the link to Stephanie Meyers website:

Flowers

I'm so excited to see that all my labors are paying off! Here is the very first of my Daffodils that popped up just a few days ago! It has been so much fun to see them slowly push their way up through the ground. The kids are having so much fun watching and anticipating the arrival of these flowers! They helped me plant them in the fall by digging the dirt and handing me the bulbs. So it's fun to see how excited they are. I can't wait for my Tulips to pop. They should be coming soon!

Two Peas in a Pod

This is Chase and Savanna. They may look "Oh Sooo Cute", but they really are the "Little Mischievous Duo"! During Preschool, Savanna heads on over to Chase's house where they run about laughing and playing. Most days Chase and Savanna will end up in matching tutus!

Kim (Chase's Mom), even found them giggling in Hailey's bed, then later in Orion's bed...hummmm I think we need to have a talk with her already! Savanna is always excited to play with Chase, as is Chase is with Savanna. He calls her Nana, at the top of his lungs, whenever she enters the room! Soooo Cute!

Registration for Kindergarten

Today was the day to get the paper work done for Emmitt starting Kindergarten in the fall! It was fun because they had a bus tour, with rules on how to behave on the bus and so forth. Emmitt and Savanna were having a blast! Emmitt sat with his friend Hailey and listened intently on how to behave while Savanna and Chase were running up and down the aisle! We thought it would be nice to have a little picture to remember this day! Emmitt is getting more and more excited as we talk about how fun it will be to go to the school with the big blue roof! When daddy got home from work, Emmitt was so excited to tell him that he got to sit on the bus! And I do have to say that sitting on that bus, did bring back memories. Man, they are so much shorter inside than I remember, or I just grew!

Joseph teaches High School English, and he was asked to participate in a teacher dance off during the spring sports assembly. Movie Night

Last night, we, as a family, watch Enchanted, which I have to say is a cute and fun family movie!Emmitt and Savanna just loved it so much. They were completely captivated through most of the movie. Towards the end of the show, the main charaters are dancing at a Ball. Emmitt and Savanna started to dance around the livingroom! It was so much fun to watch!

This is my family! I love my family! Each and everyone of them! Everytime we get out of the car Emmitt makes Joseph and I wait so that he can rub his checks with ours and say 'I love you'. What a great way to get out of the car! I love it. Savanna is so tender. She will come on my lap and stroke my check with her hand and look at me and say 'luv you mama'. And Joseph makes me feel loved and special everyday! I feel so lucky to have such a loving family.

I wanted to share a few tidbits about my kids!
Emmitt surprises us every day. We had just parked our car to go to the mall. He was waiting with Joseph at the back of the car and pointed to the license plate and read all the letters and numbers without hesitation! He is loving school and now willingly gives me information that he learned from Miss Kim (who is moving to Tennessee in tomorrow :( ). Emmitt asked me if I wanted to teach is school. Arrgh... I told him that he had to be a good boy and listen. He said that he would and so I agreed. It has been an adventure, but I'm loving teaching these kids! They are like little sponges! Emmitt loves to dance! Yup I said DANCE!! He loves making up fun and crazy moves! It is so fun to watch. What a ham!
Savanna is such a girlie girl! She is everything pink and frilly. Dress up and 'cooking' are her favorite things to do (with a play cell phone connected to her ear)! She likes to 'help' me in the kitchen by pouring the salt and pepper on the counter/floor before I can help her help me! She also loves babies and is so soft and loving most of the time. When a real baby is on my lap, it turns in to the survior of the fitest, and well Savanna wants to be the winner. Screamer her demands! Isn't is amazing how they change in a twinkling of an eye!!! lol

Our House

This is our completed house (as of 7 months ago). And our somewhat clean living room. We are really enjoying our house and are so glad that we got in before everything started to turn for the worse in the market.

It has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths (about 1400 sqft) with a nice size backyard. We are very proud of it! And yes, that is a cat in the bottom left corner in the livingroom. We love him only sometimes!!! But the kids love him (Shaed) and that is what counts. Right?!?

Here is my family. Emmitt, Joseph and Savanna! They are so much fun. Emmitt is going to be turning 5 this year in June. He is enjoying his preschool and so excited to ride the school bush in the fall. Savanna is just about to turn 2 in February. She is just talking up a storm, asking WHY for everything and scolding you with her pointer finger! lol Ahh kids! Joseph is a kind and wonderful husband who works so hard so I can stay home with my kiddies! We just moved into our home a few months ago and are loving it!
